She healed herself through nutrition, and built a business on it
If we can't find a solution, why don't we create one? That's exactly what Dorothy Olokodana (Founder of Organic Dorothy) did.
She was training as a pastry chef when, in 2012, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, which brought on a whole host of symptoms: allergies, darkened facial skin weight gain, acute sinusitis, hair loss, chronic constipation, dairy intolerance, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, heat intolerance, and so on.
Dorothy says that prior to diagnosis, she was initially treated for hay fever for over 6 months, yet the symptoms persisted. She took matters into her own hands, did some research and concluded that her symptoms were linked to poor digestive health.
She immediately went organic. This involved changing old eating habits, and eating fresh, natural and a plant based diet. This was abroad.
On returning to Nigeria, sourcing organic produce proved to be a major challenge. Again, Ms. Olokodana took control by first starting to grow her own food at home, gradually progressed to sourcing organic foods from far flung locations, and then set up her business Organic Dorothy as one-stop-shop for a few authentic organic foods.
The business Instagram page frequently throws up treasures for purchase, such as organic palm oil (pictured above), freshly harvested organic turmeric, mint, and a host of vegetables. The page also has a lot of really great, eye-opening health advice.
Dorothy has become a leading advocate for urban organic agriculture, as well as healing through nutrition.
